The world of computer gaming is a captivating realm where creativity and technology converge to create immersive experiences for players worldwide. Developing a computer game is a complex and fascinating journey that involves several intricate stages. In this comprehensive exploration, we will delve into the key steps of game development, shedding light on the intricacies involved and how MVP (Minimum Viable Product) development services can be integrated into this process.

Conceptualization and Ideation:

The first step in developing a computer game is conceiving the game’s concept and defining its core elements. Game developers brainstorm ideas, identify target audiences, and envision the game’s overall vision. This stage is crucial as it lays the foundation for the entire project. MVP development services can aid in creating a minimum viable concept to test the game’s basic viability and appeal. Additionally, during this stage, securing funding and forming a dedicated development team are essential steps.

Game Design:

Once the concept is solidified, the game design phase begins. Game designers create detailed plans outlining gameplay mechanics, level designs, characters, and storylines. These blueprints serve as the roadmap for the development team, ensuring everyone is aligned with the game’s direction. MVP development services may assist in building a rudimentary version of the game to validate design choices. At this stage, it’s crucial to consider the game’s monetization strategy, whether through one-time purchases, in-app purchases, or advertisements.

Pre-production:

During pre-production, various assets are prepared. This includes creating concept art, storyboarding, designing characters, and developing prototypes. Additionally, a technical feasibility study is conducted to ensure the chosen platform and technologies are suitable for the game. MVP development services can be invaluable in prototyping essential game mechanics and determining the game’s scope and scale.

Production:

The production phase is where the game starts to take shape. Programmers write the game code, artists create assets, and sound designers craft audio elements. This stage involves continuous collaboration between different teams to ensure the game’s components integrate seamlessly. MVP development services can provide the backbone for the game’s initial functionality, allowing for rapid iterations. Managing the development process through project management tools and techniques becomes essential to keep the project on track.

Testing and Quality Assurance:

Thorough testing is essential to identify and rectify bugs, glitches, and balance issues. Quality assurance teams rigorously test the game to ensure it meets the desired standards. MVP development services may be used to create a functional but limited version of the game for early testing and feedback from a select group of players. Moreover, it’s crucial to ensure the game complies with various regulatory requirements and standards, especially if it involves online multiplayer features or in-game purchases.

Alpha and Beta Testing:

Alpha testing involves an internal team playing the game to uncover and address issues. Beta testing, on the other hand, includes a broader group of players who provide feedback on gameplay, features, and overall experience. MVP development services can support the creation of beta versions to gather valuable insights from players. During this stage, developers should also establish a community management strategy to engage with players effectively and build anticipation for the game’s release.

Polishing and Optimization:

Based on feedback from alpha and beta testing, developers work on refining the game. This includes improving graphics, optimizing performance, enhancing gameplay mechanics, and fixing any remaining bugs. MVP development services can help streamline this process by focusing on core features and functionality. It’s also essential to create engaging marketing materials, such as trailers and promotional content, to generate interest and excitement among potential players.

Launch and Distribution:

The game is now ready for its official launch. Developers must decide on distribution platforms, such as app stores, online marketplaces, or dedicated websites. Effective marketing and promotion strategies are crucial to ensure the game reaches its target audience. Additionally, setting up analytics tools to monitor player behavior and gather data for future updates and improvements is vital.

Post-Launch Support and Updates:

A game’s journey does not end at launch; it continues with post-launch support and updates. Developers regularly release patches, updates, and downloadable content (DLC) to keep players engaged and address emerging issues. MVP development services can assist in efficiently rolling out updates while maintaining game stability. Building a strong relationship with the player community through regular communication and engagement becomes increasingly important during this phase.

Community Engagement:

Building a loyal player community is vital for the long-term success of a game. Developers interact with players through forums, social media, live events, and even in-game activities. They listen to player feedback, gather suggestions, and incorporate community-driven improvements into the game. Additionally, organizing esports tournaments and other competitive events can further strengthen the game’s community and enhance its longevity.

Conclusion:

The process of developing a computer game is a multifaceted and dynamic journey that demands creativity, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of player preferences. MVP development services, by providing a minimum viable product for early testing and refinement, can significantly enhance the efficiency and success of each stage in the game development process. As developers continually strive to create innovative and engaging gaming experiences, the future of the industry holds endless possibilities for both creators and players alike. Embracing emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) can open up new horizons for game development, ensuring that the world of digital gaming remains a captivating and ever-evolving realm.

As Esports continues to gain popularity in Australia, so does Esports betting. Esports betting involves placing bets on the outcome of Esports tournaments and leagues. It is a growing industry that is attracting a lot of attention from both fans and investors.

The Legal Status of Esports Betting in Australia

In Australia, Esports betting is legal and regulated by the government. The Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 regulates all forms of online gambling, including Esports betting. However, the act prohibits any form of online in-play betting, meaning that bets must be placed before the start of the event. This is to prevent the possibility of match-fixing or any other unethical practices.

The Future of Esports Betting in Australia

As Esports continues to grow in Australia, so does the Esports betting industry. With the rise of online gaming and streaming platforms, more and more people are taking an interest in Esports, making it a potential billion-dollar industry in the coming years. The Esports betting industry is expected to grow alongside the Esports industry, as more fans become interested in placing bets on their favorite teams and players.

However, it is important to note that there are concerns regarding the potential risks associated with Esports betting. As with any form of gambling, there is a risk of addiction and financial loss. There are also concerns regarding the potential for match-fixing and other unethical practices within the industry.

There are many great things about playing PC games online. You can play them with your friends, family, and even strangers. You don’t have to worry about setting up a computer or buying expensive hardware. All you need is a fast internet connection and a copy of the game you want to play.

With game developers churning out new games every day, there is always something for everyone. You can choose between different themes, games, and features and have an excellent gaming experience. However, you must avoid simple mistakes many gamers make when playing online.

Here are the seven most common mistakes to avoid when playing PC games online.

Choosing the Wrong Platform

The internet is filled with low-quality websites and websites that give the best gaming experiences. When choosing a gaming platform, consider whether or not it provides access to all games. If not, you may miss out on some fun titles on specific platforms.

For the best gaming experience, look for the best poker sites not on Gamstop, with many games with good security features and bonuses. The best gaming sites have a vast selection of games, offering discounts and exclusive deals to keep players coming back for more.

Before choosing a gaming platform, it’s essential to know how they work and which one is right for you. Ensure the platform has a good reputation as an authority in the industry by checking out reviews.

Ignoring Security Systems for Game Accounts

Players who ignore security systems for their game accounts may lose money or have their accounts hacked. Account security is critical when playing PC games online, so it’s important not to ignore this. The best way to prevent this is by using anti-virus software on your computer and ensuring you have a strong password that hackers can’t easily guess.

Playing With Poor Network Connection

Playing games online is a great way to stay entertained, but if your connection is slow or unreliable, you may find the experience frustrating. When playing online with a slow connection, players will have reduced gameplay performance and lag. This can lead to losing valuable time and game progress.

If you want to play an online game without any issues, you need to ensure that your connection is fast and stable. This means having a high-speed internet connection and keeping up with the latest technology updates from your ISP. If possible, you can try playing on another device with a better connection or switch to a different server.

Playing Using Public WiFi Networks

Another mistake people make is using public WiFi networks for their gaming needs. Most people don’t realize that many public WiFi networks are not secure and can be hacked easily by hackers. Public WiFi networks are easy targets for hackers and other online threats.

Ensure that you’re using a secure connection when playing online by connecting through an encrypted network such as an encrypted VPN or TOR network. If possible, choose a network that’s not open to the public so that there aren’t any outside threats trying to access your computer from the internet through those networks.

Not Backing Up Your Games

When backing up your games regularly, you’ll retrieve them if anything happens to your computer or hard drive. You should also ensure that you have them backed up onto another device in case something happens to your primary device and causes it to fail (such as losing power).

Ignoring the Terms and Conditions

Ignoring the terms and conditions of a game can be dangerous. Some games have stringent rules and regulations that limit your access to certain features or make it impossible for you to play. Some games are only available on specific platforms and devices, while others require you to link your Steam account with a platform.

Most game developers have their terms and conditions, which you should always read before playing their games. Some of these rules are well-known, like the use of minimum age requirements and other guidelines that have been in place for years. You should also pay attention to the more obscure rules that publishers may enforce.

For example, some developers may require you to provide proof of your identity before allowing you to play their games. They can ban your account from playing their games, and you will risk losing game progress.

Not Updating Your PC or Game

Some players forget or ignore updating their devices and games. Updates are released regularly to fix bugs, add new content and improve overall performance. Ensure your PC has the latest version before playing online.

Using Low-Quality PCs

Another mistake people tend to make when playing PC games is using low-quality PCs or machines with bad graphics cards or other components. These days, there are plenty of high-end gaming PCs on the market that can handle any game without issue. If you have a low-spec machine at home, ensure that your computer meets minimum requirements before starting any games.

Have a Great Gaming Experience

Playing PC games online is a great way to unwind, have fun with friends and family and enjoy the thrill of competition. But you may be making mistakes that keep you from getting the most from your experience.

Playing PC games online is a great way to unwind, have fun with friends and family, or relax. However, when playing PC games online, there are certain things that you should avoid doing. By avoiding these mistakes, you can enjoy a thrilling experience and avoid unnecessary consequences.

PC gaming has seen a long and steady climb in recent years. It is considered to have started with classic games such as Elite.

The industry has been steadily on the rise since then. This rise can be attributed to the evolving technology, which has allowed games to evolve to match user preferences. We are beginning to recognize that PC gaming is going through another evolution thanks to the rising popularity of eSports and Virtual Reality (VR).

So what are the best trends in PC gaming? Read on to find out.

Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming is an emerging technology that allows users to play their favorite games without needing any additional hardware or software.

It works by streaming games from remote servers instead of downloading them locally on your computer or laptop. This means you don’t have to worry about installing new updates or patches every time there’s an update for your favorite game.

In addition, cloud gaming allows you to play any title regardless of where you are located or what device you are using. This is why it has become so popular among gamers who like playing online casino games because they can access them anywhere at any time!

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is the most exciting trend in PC gaming. Virtual reality headsets, like Oculus Rift, have revolutionized gaming. These headsets enable you to immerse yourself in a virtual world and play games as if you are actually inside that world.

The VR headsets have made it possible for developers to create games that can be played only through these VR headsets. For example, if you want to experience how it feels to be a soldier in war or how it feels to be an astronaut floating in space, then you need a VR headset.

The main advantage of playing such games is that they will provide you with a unique experience that cannot be enjoyed by playing on your PC or console. You will also see things from different perspectives which may not be possible otherwise.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is similar to virtual reality; it allows you to play games in an alternative world where everything around you looks real but isn’t real at all.

You can see your surroundings through your device’s camera, but they will have added effects. They may be characters talking with you or interactive objects appearing on your screen while playing the game.

Some games make use of both augmented reality and virtual reality technologies. They enable payers to interact with their environment differently depending on the type of game they’re playing or how they want to experience it.

Competitive Esports

eSports is one of the most important trends in PC gaming right now. This competitive gaming format allows players to compete against each other in popular multiplayer games such as League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

The top eSports tournaments have prize pools worth millions of dollars, with winners taking home millions in cash prizes. It’s not just about winning anymore; players also get lucrative sponsorship deals that can help them become millionaires overnight.

In addition to offering sponsorships, many eSports organizations also offer salaries to their players. It enables them to focus on training full-time instead of holding down a job while competing professionally.

Quicker and More Powerful Hardware

The first thing that has changed in recent years is that hardware has become faster than ever. The latest generation of PCs can handle 4K and even 8K resolutions, with high frame rates and great realism. This means that even if you have an older PC, it may still play games smoothly at these higher resolutions.

Games as a Service

This is one of the biggest developments in the PC gaming industry right now. GaaS refers to games that follow a service model rather than a traditional release model. In other words, they’re released as an ongoing service with regular updates and new content. The players pay for these updates rather than buying the game up front.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t just an online thing. Offline games can also use GaaS by having downloadable content that players can purchase separately from the main game.

Early Access Games

Early access games have become increasingly popular over the last few years, with many developers choosing this format over a traditional release date-based model. It allows them to get initial feedback from players and make changes based on user feedback before launching their game into full production.

This can help developers ensure a high-quality product when they ship their game to the market. It also allows gamers to play games early while they’re still being developed.

Free-to-Play Games

There are many free-to-play games that offer gamers a chance to play without paying anything at all. These games are often supported by microtransactions or ads that help generate revenue for developers.

This trend has become popular over the years because it allows gamers to try out games before deciding whether they want to buy them. This also helps developers get feedback from their users about what features they would like to see in future updates for their games, thus improving their products overall.

PC Gaming Will Keep Changing!

Many new trends are coming in this sector. Some will be lasting, while others will burn out within months if they prove unprofitable. With that said, we can expect PC gaming to live on for a long time as it is, and continue to grow exponentially with the right investments in research and development.

Gaming is a pastime for many. They spend hours each day doing so. It is common to hear true gamers talk about how much time they spend gaming.

PC games can be complex, but there are some things that you can do that will improve your experience when playing on your PC. Many people will experience PC gaming where they cannot complete a game, or it doesn’t run well.

With so many different games and purchasing options, PCs can be a daunting platform for any rookie. Here’s some advice on how to succeed in PC gaming.

Customize Your Controls

One of the biggest advantages of PC gaming is that you have total control over your setup. While console gamers are stuck with whatever controller their system offers, PC gamers can use any combination of controllers or input devices.

For example, if you have an Xbox controller that works with Windows 10 but not many other games, simply plug in an adapter and use it as you would on your Xbox One console. You can also use multiple controllers at once to play multiplayer games with friends without having to buy additional hardware.

The best way to take advantage of this is by customizing your controls to feel more natural than default settings. For example, if you’re playing an FPS game where shooting feels awkward because the buttons aren’t mapped correctly, map them yourself until it feels right!

Get a Gaming Mouse and Keyboard

Playing video games on casino sites not on GamStop UK is all about having fun and winning. Still, there’s no denying that having the right equipment can make all the difference between being just okay and being awesome at your favorite game.

A gaming mouse or keyboard is one piece of equipment that will help you succeed in PC gaming. These devices have been designed specifically for gamers. They include extra buttons and programmable keys that allow you to navigate menus quickly and easily – which can be crucial when playing competitively online against other players worldwide!

Use Steam Cloud for Your Saved Games

Cloud storage services like Dropbox or Google Drive have made sharing files between devices easier. If you use Steam for your games, there’s another service called Steam Cloud that lets you store all your saved games online. They’ll always be at hand when switching between computers or using multiple PCs at home or work. Just log into the same account from any device, and all your progress will be synced automatically without re-downloading anything!

Be Nice to Your Eyes

Another thing that you should do is take care of your eyes. The most common problem with PC gaming is eye strain. Glare, lack of brightness, and too much exposure to blue light can cause that.

The best way to protect your eyes while gaming is by using an anti-glare screen protector. This will reduce the blue light entering your eyes by reflecting it into the monitor. You can also adjust your monitor brightness or use a program like Flux which will automatically dim your screen when it’s not in use.

Another option that you can try is wearing glasses with blue light-blocking technology. This will prevent any strain on your eyes caused by looking at a computer screen for long periods.

Reduce Input Lag

Input lag is the time it takes for your commands to get carried out by your computer. In other words, it’s how long it takes for you to press a button on your keyboard or controller and see the result on the screen. If this lag is too high, you might not react quickly enough in real-time situations in games, which means you’ll lose more often than not.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to reduce input lag:

  • Ensure all cables are properly connected and plugged into the right ports (or hubs). This includes power and video cables (like HDMI or DisplayPort).
  • Ensure all drivers are up-to-date and compatible with your hardware devices (especially graphics card drivers).
  • Disable any unnecessary background processes that may be running on your computer while you’re playing games (like antivirus software or web browsers).

Don’t Forget to Unplug

One of the most common mistakes people make when building their PCs is failing to unplug every cable before they start screwing everything together. This can cause damage if a stray wire gets tangled around something sharp or yanks on something important while you’re working. It’s also a good idea because it ensures that no stray voltage flows through any part of your system while it’s being worked on (and yes, this can happen).

Keeping things unplugged also makes moving parts around easier and seeing how they’re going together. Just ensure everything is plugged back in before you power up again!

Take It Easy at First

Before going into a tournament, you must understand what kind of gamer you are. This will allow you to adjust your mindset accordingly. Are you someone who likes playing casually or competitively? Do you prefer team-based games or solo? Do you like playing shooters or racing games?

If you want to win tournaments, ensure that you are ready for them by practicing beforehand. The more prepared you are when it comes time for a tournament, the better off you will be when it comes down to crunch time.

Become Better at PC Gaming Today!

No matter how big a game you’re playing is, there’s always a way to win. If you’ve struggled in the past, try these tips to give yourself an edge next time you sit down for some hardcore gaming!

In The Serpent Rogue you awaken as a mysterious Warden in a land overcome with the blight of corruption. It’s a cruel world and nothing is given to the Warden for free. Equipped with nothing but a journal and a portable lab, the Warden must use the power of alchemy to tame the wildlife, earn some coin, adapt to the land, and ultimately cure the corruption.

The Serpent Rogue takes a non hand-holding approach, leaving the player in a strange new land to fend for themselves. The Warden takes to the world, mashing ingredients together in hopes that it’ll work out. Two ingredients can create a health potion, but add one additional ingredient and you can have a potent poison on hand. There are potions to turn into different animals, summon wildlife to help, cure or cause status ailments; really any problem that rears its head can be fought with patiently researching and creating a potion. All of your trials and errors are tracked and provide the bulk of the learning curve of the game. There are a few scarce recipes hidden throughout the world, but the best way to learn is burning through materials for research purposes. Trial and error is essential to survival.

The Serpent Rogue does not do very much to live up to its Rogue namesake with only a minor amount of randomization. Every few minutes the main exploration map areas are completely wiped out by the corruption, resetting and randomizing the item drops and resource locations. Not necessarily what I would call a roguelike, but it does provide a touch of spontaneity to each playthrough.

Serpent Rogue also borrows a mechanic as made popular by Dark Souls, where upon death all of your equipment drops and it’s up to you to recover it all before it’s lost. Meaning you could get a nice haul in random level reset, lose it all, and not be able to replicate the haul again.

The combat in The Serpent Rogue leaves a lot to be desired. There is no dodge or roll mechanic, you can only walk and sprint short distances. As for attacks there’s only a standard light and heavy swing or throwing an item, meaning you need to effectively make your move and run on most enemies as combos can be tough to pull off. This style of combat also makes finding and crafting strong weapons vital for a boss encounter. To help out with the limited combat, you can recruit companions to take some bumps for you. The AI for these companions is nothing to write home about, but they can brute force some HP off of enemies or distract them from sucker punching you while going about your business.

In addition to the combat, your weapons and equipment degrade with each use, pushing the importance of learning the crafting recipes sooner rather than later. There is plenty of equipment and resources to be found in the wild, so you could make it through without learning to craft certain things, but reliably having the needed tools at hand can’t be beat.

Serpent Rogue does include an encumbrance system that just feels downright frustrating. For a game that heavily emphasizes collection and burning through tons of items for the sake of learning, your encumbrance amount is very low. The Warden can carry about 40 pounds worth of equipment which fills up incredibly fast, meaning you’ll have to regularly ditch inventory or helplessly get stuck in the wilderness when the corruption attacks. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve been done with encumbrance systems since Skyrim came out. I understand what they’re in the game to do, but when it’s as heavily restrictive as it is in The Serpent Rogue it’s just taking away the enjoyment I would have gotten out of exploration.

To alleviate some of those issues, there is a fast travel system that helps a lot. With the nature of how fast the corruption spreads, how fast your weight limit is reached, and how fast your equipment breaks, being able to jump from map to map is a godsend. It’s at a point where The Serpent Rogue would feel almost unplayable if you couldn’t use this fast travel.

The Serpent Rogue has a lot of genuinely great concepts under the hood, but the execution could use some refinement. The ability to science and alchemy your way around any obstacle is really interesting, as well as the concept of trial and error as a means of exploration and learning. However the short time frame of the corruption reset, the limited carrying capacity, and the small amount of maps available can make the game feel more rushed than it needs to be. The need to explore is at odds with how the mechanics of the game constantly force you to keep moving. There are few games that offer a completely hands off experience, allowing the player to discover and learn on their own, and The Serpent Rogue offers something that can help scratch that itch.

What is the first thing you think about when you’re pondering on your next hard-as-nails soulsike? I bet it’s that none of these games have enough Tetris-like elements to them right? No? No, me either actually but that is exactly where we’re going with Loot River. Here we aren’t just interested in the plethora of things looking to give us a really bad day but also the very ground we’re standing on. Does all of this sound absolutely batshit crazy? Yes, it does! Is it worth indulging in? Well that’s what I’m here for, isn’t it?

In Loot River sections of ground slot together and can be moved about like a giant jig-saw. If, the said jig-saw had lots of things on its pieces that were more than willing to murder you. The first question we need to answer, though, is whether this mechanic makes sense or does anything for the game. Actually, in a strategic sense, it definitely does. It’s important for getting from A to B too as only some floating platforms will fit through certain gaps in the map. It feels a little bit odd at first, but when you get used to how everything moves it’s quite a lot of fun. Most importantly it isn’t a gimmick. I hate those. Don’t sell a game on the basis of a mechanic that you’ll only meet in passing, that’s a bit of a con. No cons here, so we’re fine.

I think you can probably guess how being able to move the battleground about can be helpful. You’ll often find that platforms have a mix of enemies occupying them and some will be a lot tougher than others. It’s much easier to kill a tank-type enemy when you aren’t being swarmed by weaker enemies at the same time. With this in mind, if you can lure that tank onto the platform you’re standing on and break it away from the rest of the pack you’re going to make your life a lot easier. The downside to this is that if you aren’t quick or get mobbed before you can break off; you might end up on a much smaller platform surrounded by everything. This is bad, but that’s the chance you take.

I just can never quite trust anything with tentacles. Especially when it’s telling me to trust it.

Loot River is a combination of soulslike and roguelike elements and, to be honest, I’m not sure either is working as well as they could be. This title definitely has a soulslike quality in its difficulty. Loot River is brutally unforgiving. A lot of the platforms you’re fighting on are small and if you’re up against something that’s heavy-hitting you don’t have a lot of maneuvering room. You can dodge and parry but as there is a lot going on all the time, I found myself swinging like an idiot and hoping for the best. What this leaves is an action game with soulslike qualities. I get the difficulty curve but that needs to be tempered and I’m not sure there’s enough balance there. Saying that this game isn’t what I’d call a true soulslike anyway so it’s not the end of the world.

The roguelike element of Loot River is definitely noticeable. The levels are procedurally generated so you never know quite what you’re getting. Saying this, the pool of enemies you’re facing isn’t massive. This means that you’ll face enemies in a different order and you’ll be up against differing amounts of the varying enemy types but when you’ve seen everything on a given level you’ve seen it. Don’t expect something new to suddenly appear and end your existence because you haven’t handled it before, this won’t be happening. At least not as far as I’ve seen in the several runs that I’ve completed. Loot is also randomized but this is something that’s worth noting all by itself.

Fire is really bad for your enemies. The thing is, it isn’t very healthy for you either.

In Loot River you’d expect there to be a massive amount of items and other treasures to find and play with. Loot is one thing that’s sorely lacking in this title. You’ll find chests but these are few and far between. They don’t usually contain anything new either. You can unlock new weapons in the game’s hub world at the blacksmith. These are the weapons that appear in the game as you play. You’ll get some pretty cool modifiers added like fire or poison but you won’t find anything especially new in the chests. This makes it less Loot River and more, Collect What You’ve Already Seen River. That doesn’t sound as good, does it? This isn’t a massive moan because the gameplay is still fun but at the same time, it’s a bit of a letdown.

I have one very important piece of advice if you like your sanity. Do NOT play this game without a controller. I started by playing Loot River with keyboard controls and very nearly broke my own review doing it. The problem is you have two sets of movement controls doing different things and as gamers, our minds don’t work like that. WASD moves you and the arrows move the tiles. I died so many times because I was pushing the wrong buttons. Add to this that most of the other commands are placed around the WASD keys and you’re just asking for carpal tunnel. I tried again with a controller and all my problems were alleviated. This still isn’t great by the way. It’s only recently I bought a gaming controller for my PC, a lot of gamers probably still don’t have one, and, believe me, Loot River is virtually inaccessible otherwise.

As with all these games, how you build your character is key.

In true roguelike fashion, you’re trying to run a whole game in one go so I’m not going to even pretend that I completed Loot River. I obviously haven’t. What I’ve played up to now has been fun and innovative though. As you meet more characters through exploring you’ll fall into the usual roguelike antics that we all expect. The souls-like edge this game has though gives it a different dimension of difficulty that might not be for everyone.

Nuts and bolts time then. Graphically, Loot River is reminiscent of the 90s top-down RPGs that I absolutely loved and the music and effects are fitting for the aesthetic. The characters aren’t particularly memorable and the story is just okay for me. It’s a narrative that builds as you go but to make this work in a game that’s different every time you really have to have a strong set of story markers. I’m not comparing but if you take something like Hades, bits of plot are unlocking every game so you stay hooked. Here I felt that there were long gaps where I really didn’t know what was going on. Loot River is a game that relies more on its action aspects so the story is less important but it’s also another factor that should keep you wanting to come back for more. This being said there’s less of a pull to keep going.

Can we guess what happened next? Spoiler alert. I started over.

All in all, we have a game that does everything pretty well. The difficulty is there for the masochists amongst you and there’s a lot of action to be had. As I said earlier this game needs a controller and I don’t think this is something that should ever really be mandatory for PC so there are a few points lost there. Equally the lack of diverse things to find can make Loot River feel a bit sparse at times. Saying this, there’s plenty of killing to be done and the tile movement mechanic is fun and different. I would say it’s slightly above average on most fronts so still worth a go, if you like roguelikes and if you’re a patient player.

love me an arcade title. There are some games where the minute you start playing you’re instantly transported back to whichever your favorite amusements were. These games can be from any genre, they just have a certain quality to them that makes them fit on a cabinet. The game we’re looking at today is the first roguelike title I’ve come across that genuinely gives me this feeling. If it had been sitting in an amusement arcade when I was a kid, I’d have been broke. I’m so glad this addictive genre wasn’t a thing back then or I’d have been screwed. The title is Revita, I’ve been playing the Steam version, and my god it’s fun!

Revita takes you on a journey to the Clock Tower. To get there you’ll need to travel on the metro from area to area and take elevators until you find that level’s boss. Each zone has roughly ten rooms for you to battle through or collect items from and away you go. Nice and easy right? Nope! This is a roguelike and it’s as true to the genre as anything else I’ve played. Rooms are small and laid out differently every time you enter them, enemies are randomized and death absolutely awaits you. This is what we’re here for though so we’re meeting all expectations thus far.

Memoria Station. This is your hub and one of the few friendly places.

Revita is a game that grows as you play and this is one of the things that pulls me back to the roguelike genre over and over again. The games that allow levels to expand based on what you unlock and how many times you play them are, for me at least, the ones that really stand out. As an example, I’d completed the first zone a few times and thought I had a pretty good handle on what to expect. On my third or fourth run into the game, I got off the metro and was told that I could hear buzzing. I thought I’d unlocked a new bit of plot when actually I’d unlocked a new brand of pain. Suddenly I was dealing with flying enemies with drill bits for heads. Being bull-rushed by these kamikaze bastards when I already had plenty on my plate wasn’t fun. Or should I say, it was loads of fun when I’d stopped cursing at the screen and bouncing about like an idiot. These are the things I look for and I’m always happy when I find them.

The Metro. It’s your only way of getting to the Clock Tower.

Revita doesn’t just build in terms of the enemies you face. but also the characters you meet. Any roguelike worth its salt has some sort of hub level. In this case, we have Memoria Station and it’s here that some of the characters you unlock as you play will go. These characters range from a girl that will upgrade the rooms of the station for you, to a practice dummy that sells you weapons and more. There’s also something locked in the station called The Imprisoned. By completing challenges you’ll earn prison keys; you can also find them as you play. Giving these keys to The Imprisoned will grant you new items that will be added to the levels as you enter them. Getting all these wonderful things is great. Is it wise letting the big scary monster that’s been bound with well over a hundred locks loose a good idea though?

The story unlocks as you play and I’m not going to try and explain it. This is basically because I don’t really know enough myself yet. What I can say is that some very dark themes are being approached by this title, suicide being one of them. This is reflected both in the bosses you face and an interesting and lethal mechanic that Revita employsSomething I think that’s important to note is that Revita isn’t a depressing game. For all the danger and lethality present here, this title is bright and cartoony. You’re fighting bosses with names like Denial and Anger but you’re beating them, which sends a real message of hope as you play.

Your first major obstacle.

The mechanic I’ve just mentioned is one that puts your character’s life in balance at all times. In Revita your life is a currency. This means that if you want to buy an item from the shop or gain a passive at a shrine you have to pay for it with hearts. The more hearts you spend at a shrine the better the ability you gain. You have to be able to survive, though, which makes the risk to reward question even more important. The same applies to upgrading what you have. You’ll find a blacksmith on the train in between levels. His services don’t come for free though unless you’ve acquired a hammer or two on your travels. He will help you to make the abilities you’ve acquired more powerful at the cost of some of your life.

The shops are great. The wares come at quite a price, though.

On top of the slightly unusual bartering system present in Revita, you’ll also lose full heart bottles as you go. This creates a real sense of danger as you play. In other games, this would be the final straw as you’re taking a mechanic that’s going to make an already tough game more difficult and putting it on steroids. In this particular case, it all fits. By paying to better yourself in the game you’re already committing suicide, losing those hearts reflects just how difficult the journey is and your character’s drive to continue. The flip side of all of this, though, is that other thing I mentioned earlier. There is always hope.

The Imprisoned might just be locked away for a reason.

Revita uses an interesting healing system. You don’t collect potions or heal at given points in the game; instead, you can self-heal. You gain energy based on creating kill streaks and generally doing well. This can be spent on refilling your heart containers. The better you do and the less life you lose the more likely you’ll be able to keep those containers topped up. There are also means of pulling back empty containers that you’ve lost so as not to make the game completely impossible. Revita is a game that’s crammed with metaphors and everything fits really nicely. As I say, the ideas being used in this title wouldn’t work in other games in the roguelike genre but they’re ingenious in this one.

Revita is a twin-stick shooter, so in essence, really needs a controller to play smoothly. This being said, the control setup isn’t overly complex so I can’t see this as being impossible to play with a keyboard and mouse. I think this is important to mention because too many PC games are becoming controller heavy and for me at least, a gamepad should be a useful peripheral on the PC, not a must-have; this is what we have consoles for.

Other than the controls Revita is a beautifully crafted game. This title looks gorgeous and the sound and effects are all very fitting for what’s being portrayed. Most importantly Revita runs as smooth as butter. I never felt like I’d died because of a glitch or because anything in the UI was making things awkward. I mentioned this earlier but this game feels like an arcade action-platformer in the truest sense.

If you’re a roguelike fan looking for a new thrill, Revita is definitely a great way to go. I can’t think of another game to directly compare this one to because it’s so different mechanically from most of the others that I’ve played. For the pure addictive value, I’d pop it into the same boat as something like Enter the Gungeon but honestly, the two titles are only similar in that sense. This is a game that feels like it was made by one of the major dev companies, not the small indie developer that masterminded it. For that reason alone this is one that’s well worth adding to your library.
